  25. ====================
  26. The following document provides installation procedures for NetShield. For 
  27. further information regarding NetShield, refer to your Using NetShield 
  28. manual or view the file NETSHLD.PDF using the Adobe Acrobat reader.
  29.  
  30. NetShield must be installed on every file server you want to be protected. 
  31. (Since NetShield is licensed per file server, please refer to your license 
  32. agreement in order to ensure proper legal compliance.)
  33. If installing from a BBS/FTP/WEB release, unzip the files into a working
  34. directory on your PC. Begin the install by running SETUP.

  37. System Requirements
  38. ===================
  39. Environment:
  40. The following criteria must be met in order to run NetShield.
  41.  
  42. Network Loadable Module Requirements:
  43. * Novell NetWare 3.X or 4.X, including NetWare Directory Services (NDS) 
  44.   support
  45. * Network Disk Space: 2 MB required
  46. * RAM: Minimum of 718 K free on file server
  47.  
  48. NOTE: Additional patches are needed for NetWare 3.x or 4.x installations 
  49.       (refer to the patches section below. NetShield is not compatible
  50.       with NetWare v3.10.
  51.  
  52. Administrator Console Requirements:
  53. * Operating System: DOS 5.0 or greater
  54. * User Interface: Microsoft Windows 3.1X in enhanced mode
  55. * CPU: 386SX or higher
  56. * RAM: 4 MB
  57. * Workstation Disk Space: 7MB required
  58. * Monitor: VGA or better
  59.  
  60.  
  61. Required NetWare Patches
  62. ========================
  63. Novell NetWare 3.x and 4.x File Server Requirements:
  64.  
  65. NetShield requires some NetWare update files for NetWare 3.x and 4.x. 
  66. These updates are supplied with the CD-ROM distributions in the file
  67. LIBUP8.EXE. This file is available from Novells NetWire service and is
  68. also available from the McAfee BBS and FTP site.
  69.  
  70. * From Novell, refer to the Novlib Forum on CompuServe, the ftp.novell.com 
  71.   anonymous ftp site on the Internet, or other Novell on-line services.
  72.  
  73. * From McAfee, download it from the McAfee BBS under File Area "P" 
  74.   (for Patches), or from the mcafee.com ftp site in the pub/patches directory.
  75.  
  76. The INSTALL.EXE program from LIBUP8.EXE will automatically copy all 
  77. appropriate files to update your NetWare 3.1x or 4.x file server. Simply
  78. expand LIBUP8.EXE, view INSTALL.DOC, and then run INSTALL.
  79.  
  80. NOTE: After update installation, the file server must be downed and
  81.       restarted.
  82.  
  83. AIO.NLM and AIOCOMX.NLM are installed for use with the pager notification 
  84. option. If you intend to use pager notification on a NetWare file server, 
  85. Refer to "Enabling Pager Notification" in Chapter 5, "Notification and 
  86. Reporting,"  in your Using NetShield manual for more information.
  87.  
  88. NOTE 2:  LIBUP7.EXE has been withdrawn by Novell. It is recommended that 
  89.      LIBUP7 not be used.
  90.    
  91.  
  92. STRTL4.EXE  - NOVELL SUPPLIED PATCHES
  93. ------------------------------------
  94.   Problems with NetWare's ability to release some areas of short term 
  95.   memory cause NetWare to occasionally issue short term memory allocation 
  96.   messages when running NetShield. A Novell supplied file, SPXS.NLM as
  97.   supplied in STRTL4.EXE will provide a work around for this problem.
  98.  
  99.   STRTL4.EXE also contains additional patches which are recommended for 
  100.   NetShield. NetWare 3.12 users should apply SPXDDFIX.NLM. NetWare 3.11 
  101.   users should apply SPXFIX2.NLM.

  103.  
  104. Installation Instructions
  105. =========================
  106.  
  107. Before Installation
  108. To install NetShield, you must:
  109.  
  110. * Unload the NetShield NLM if running. 
  111. * Login to the server as a SUPERVISOR, ADMIN or equivalent.
  112. * Ensure that a drive is mapped to the destination servers SYS volume
  113.   For example:   MAP NEXT MYSERVER\SYS:
  114. * Have at least 7 MB disk space available on the PC that will be running 
  115.   the Windows console for the NetShield program.
  116. * Have at least 2 MB available on the file server that will be running 
  117.   the network loadable module.
  118.  
  119. Use the following procedure to install NetShield on your network. 
  120. You can exit the installation at any time by choosing Exit in the lower 
  121. right corner of the installation screen, or by pressing F3. 
  122.  
  123. If you are running a previous version of NetShield, the NLM must be unloaded
  124. from the file server. At the file server type:
  125.  
  126.    UNLOAD NETSHLD
  127.  
  128. 1.      If you are installing from:
  129.  
  130. * CD ROM. Place the CD in your CD drive.
  131.  
  132. * BBS/FTP/WEB Release. Unzip the compressed files to a working directory on
  133.   your local workstation.
  134.  
  135. 2.      Choose FILE | RUN from Program Manager and Browse for the 
  136.     SETUP.EXE file in the appropriate directory, or type SETUP 
  137.     at the DOS prompt.
  138.  
  139. NOTE: After installation, a log file (INS232.LOG) which lists installation
  140.       details will be created and placed in your Windows directory.
  141.       The log file also lists any errors that occurred during the
  142.       installation. If an error that prevents the completion of the install
  143.       process occurs, the log file will be displayed automatically.
  144.  
  145. 3.      The Welcome dialog box will be displayed.
  146.  
  147. Ensure that you have Supervisor or equivalent rights to the destination 
  148. file server.
  149.  
  150. 4.      Choose Continue.
  151.  
  152. The Installation Configuration dialog box is displayed.
  153.  
  154. NOTE: The Installation Configuration dialog box displays the required space 
  155.       and the suggested space on the selected volume of the current file 
  156.       server. If there is insufficient space, you must choose a new 
  157.       destination or cancel the installation.
  158.  
  159. 5.      Enter your company name in the Company Name text box.
  160.  
  161. 6.      Select a file server from the provided drop-down list box.
  162.  
  163. NOTE    Only attached or logged-in servers will be displayed.
  164.  
  165. 7.      Enter the drive and path that the NetShield Windows Console should 
  166.     be installed to, or choose Browse to locate a path. We recommend
  167.     using the default paths supplied.
  168.  
  169. 8.      Enter the drive and path that the NetShield Server NLMs should be 
  170.     installed to, or choose Browse to locate a path. Default path is
  171.     recommended.
  172.  
  173. 9.      Select the On-Line Documents check box to install the Adobe Acrobat 
  174.         documentation file.
  175.  
  176. 10.     Choose Workstation Options and select the "Configure Desktop" check 
  177.     box to instruct SETUP to create a McAfee group and program icon.
  178.  
  179. 11.     Choose the Server Options button and select the "Modify AUTOEXEC.NCF"
  180.     check box to instruct SETUP to modify your file servers AUTOEXEC.NCF 
  181.     file to automatically load the NetShield NLM at file server startup.
  182.  
  183. If you choose to modify AUTOEXEC.NCF, NetShield will add a line containing 
  184. "NETSHLD.NCF" to your existing AUTOEXEC.NCF file. This line references the
  185. NETSHLD.NCF file in SYS:\SYSTEM which contains necessary loading instructions
  186. to launch NETSHLD.NLM.
  187.  
  188. NOTE: If you choose not to modify the AUTOEXEC.NFC file during installation, 
  189.       the NetShield NLM will have to be loaded manually whenever the server
  190.       is rebooted. Refer to "Loading NLMs" for details.
  191.  
  192. 12.     Choose Continue.
  193.  
  194. A dialog box is displayed with a percent completed bar.
  195.  
  196. If prompted, insert the remaining disks to complete the installation.
  197.  
  198. The Setup Information dialog box is displayed.
  199.  
  200. 13.     Choose OK to indicate that the installation is complete. 
  201.  
  202. IMPORTANT: View the README.1ST file for any updated product information.
  203.  
  204. NetShield installation is complete. Refer to Chapter 3, "The NetShield 
  205. Console," for a description of NetShield's console and features.

  208. Loading NetShield NLM
  209. =====================
  210. The installation program is unable to automatically load NetShield on your
  211. file server. To load the NetShield NLM
